A Poem to My Mother (2016)
Moving to Chicago in 2013 meant that I’d be missing holidays and birthdays with my family for the first time. This emotion drove me closer to my pen & poetry. In 2016, unable to make it home for Mother’s Day—and realizing I hadn’t called home much—I felt compelled to put into words how much I knew she loved me.
The universe can strip it all away,
Until all we have left are words
Until gravity can't hold us,
And the sky becomes our floor
Until the Sun loses its flame,
And the oceans flow no more
Even in those times,
With hunger on our tongues,
Prayer on our breath,
Toxins in our lungs
I know, as sure as a poem's rhyme:
"I love you" is on your mind.
Happy Madre’s Day.
That Time I Tried to Sell My Brother’s Veggie Burger Recipe to McDonald’s CMO in College
As an Account Management intern at The Marketing Store in the summer of 2013, we were asked to give a presentation on what inspired us. I shared the story of meeting a McDonald’s executive in 2012 and my bold attempt to sell him my brother's (who’s a real chef) veggie burger recipe. More importantly, I reflected on how that connection ultimately brought me to Chicago and the lesson I learned about the power of a helping hand.
